AGELESS MARKETING

How to choose a web design agency for small business

The questions to ask a web design agency before you hire one: who writes the copy, what search setup is included, what you own, and how to compare proposals.

Most small businesses hire a web design agency once every few years, so the process feels unfamiliar every time. The agencies all have good-looking portfolios. What separates them is what happens before and after the design: how they plan the site, who writes it, how it is found in search, and who you can call when something needs to change.

Start with the job the website has to do

Write down one sentence before your first call: what should a visitor do on this site? Book an appointment, request a quote, call the office, or understand a service well enough to trust you. That sentence is the yardstick for every proposal. An agency that asks about it in the first meeting is planning a business tool. An agency that opens with color palettes is planning a brochure.

Ask the same questions to every agency

  • Who writes the words? Many projects stall because the owner is expected to supply all the copy. Find out whether writing is included and who approves it.
  • How will people find the site? Ask what search setup is included at launch: page titles, descriptions, site speed, mobile layout, and a sitemap submitted to Google.
  • What do you own? You should own your domain, your content, and admin access to your analytics, no matter who builds or hosts the site.
  • What happens after launch? Ask who makes changes, how fast, and whether that is included or billed separately.
  • How will we know it is working? A good agency names what it will measure, such as calls, form submissions, or booked appointments, and shows you those numbers.

Compare proposals on scope, not only on price

Two quotes can describe very different projects. One may include planning, copywriting, search setup, and monthly reporting. Another may cover a template and nothing after launch. Line the proposals up side by side and mark what each one includes. The cheaper quote is often missing the work that makes the site produce leads.

Check how they communicate

You should know who your contact is, how often you will hear from them, and how decisions get made. Ask what the agency needs from you, such as photos, reviews, or approvals, so the timeline does not slip on your side.

Talk to a past client

If two agencies look equal, ask each for a client you can call. Ask whether deadlines held, whether the agency explained tradeoffs plainly, and whether that client would hire them again. Those answers tell you how the agency behaves when something goes wrong, which a portfolio cannot show.

How Ageless Marketing handles this

Ageless Marketing builds websites as part of its Foundation System, which includes a conversion-focused website or redesign, SEO setup, technical optimization, two SEO blog posts a month, monthly reporting, and a strategy call. It starts at $2,500 a month with a three-to-six-month minimum term, depending on scope. If you are comparing agencies, use the questions above with us too. You can see how the work is scoped on our website design and development page.
